It feels like every day there’s something new to be outraged about, or a new piece of information about something that is already outrageous. But how can those feelings of outrage be used productively to create real change? Global social innovation leader Steve Davis believes he has the answer.
In order to provide guidance on harnessing our outrage, Davis joined us in conversation with author and global health advocate Chelsea Clinton to discuss the ideas shared in his book Undercurrents: Channeling Outrage to Spark Practical Activism. He identified five global undercurrents with outsized importance that are shaping our world: our global economies are structurally changing, the role of communities in social change is morphing, equity is reshaping activism, the impact of digital disruption is more extensive, and the perception of social change as attractive is emerging. With unique insight, he shared stories, experiences, data, and observations from across the globe. Davis invited us to a conversation that is perfect for activists and the intellectually curious alike who are interested in increasing their understanding of the changing world around them—and in instigating and encouraging that change.
Steve Davis is a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and is a senior strategic advisor and interim director, China Country Office, for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He serves as co-chair of the World Health Organization’s Digital Health Technical Advisory Group and is a member of numerous boards and advisory committees. He is the former president and CEO of PATH, a leading global health innovation organization; former Director of Social Innovation at McKinsey & Company; and former CEO of Corbis.
Chelsea Clinton is the vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, where she works alongside Foundation leadership and partners to help create economic opportunity, improve public health, and inspire civic engagement and service across the United States and around the world. She also teaches at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and has written several books for young readers, including She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World.
