Civic Saturday, hosted by Jená Cane and Arista Burwell Chen, is a civic analogue to a place of worship: a gathering of friends and strangers to nurture a spirit of shared purpose. But it’s not about church, synagogue, or mosque religion. It’s about American civic religion. It includes song, readings of civic scripture (great and provocative American texts), a sermon by Citizen University founder Eric Liu, and silent reflection. In a time of deep anxiety and political polarization, people need to join together and seek reckoning with the meaning of our nation’s creed—of liberty, equality, and self-government that truly unites us.
