Philip Cafaro, a philosophy professor at Colorado State University, published How Many Is Too Many?: The Progressive Argument for Reducing Immigration into the United States in February of 2015. Cafaro admits that his position is not popular among his peers. He has been called a nativist and a racist, been picketed on his own campus, and had close friendships strained. He was not deterred. Cafaro maintains that excessive immigration in our country has flooded labor markets, leading to lower wages, unsafe working conditions, and political disempowerment. He lays out the impacts of our rapid population expansion, including stalled economic maturity, urban sprawl, and environmental damage. Rooting his argument in progressive ideals, Cafaro offers a comprehensive plan for immigration reform. He criticizes our nation’s obsession with material growth, offering in its place a mature vision of America, not brimming but balanced, where all the different people who constitute this great nation of immigrants can live sustainably and well.
